Traveling is a wonderful opportunity to explore new places and enjoy the beauty around you. However, this experience can be disrupted if you don’t regularly check your PNR status. So, what exactly is a PNR number?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a 10-digit number assigned when you book a train ticket with Indian Railways. In the past, checking your PNR status required a visit to the railway reservation counter. Now, with modern technology, you can easily check it online. This unique number can be found in the top-left corner of your train ticket.

When a passenger provides their personal details, such as name, age, gender, berth preference, journey date, contact information, train number, and class of travel, a PNR is generated by the Central Reservation System (CRS). This automated system, managed by Indian Railways, creates a PNR number only after the details are submitted online or written on a reservation slip.
It’s important to remember that once a reservation is made, the issued PNR and its details are retained, even if changes are made to the booking. The only exception is if the booking is for multiple passengers or if some passengers have canceled their tickets.
When you book your ticket online through an app or website, the PNR will be provided on your e-ticket or i-ticket, which you can later print out. For many passengers, the main challenge is to check and understand the status of their PNR. Here are three simple ways to check the status of your PNR:
Check PNR Status on the Website
To check your PNR status, simply visit the website and look for the PNR enquiry section. On the homepage, you’ll find a text box where you can enter your 10-digit PNR number. After entering it, click the “Get PNR Status” button. The system will display the details of your booking. Based on the current status, you can decide whether to proceed with the confirmed ticket, make changes to the booking if needed, or cancel it. You’ll also find additional information, such as options for re-booking, and useful travel tips or details about popular tourist spots.
Check PNR Status via Mobile or Landline
If you don’t have internet access or find it inconvenient to use, there’s an alternative for you. You can check your PNR status using your mobile phone or landline.
- Via SMS: Simply send a text message with your PNR number to one of the following numbers: 57886, 54959, 139, or 5676747.
- Via Call: If you prefer calling, dial 139 on your landline phone. You’ll receive information about your PNR confirmation, departure time, arrival time, accommodation details, fare, availability, and more.
Check PNR Status via Android App
Indian Railways has quickly embraced new technology, making it easier to check your PNR status. You can use the Trainman app on your Android smartphone. Simply download the app from the Google Play Store. Once installed, open the app and enter your 10-digit PNR number. Hit “Check PNR,” and the app will show you the latest information about your booking, updated directly from the CRS (Central Reservation System).
